Shannon, the second largest town in County Clare, is located just off the N18 National Primary Route from Ennis to Limerick. The N18 is an integral part of the western road network, which connects all of the major towns along the west coast from Derry in the North to Cork in the South.
Shannon town is located on the river Shannon and is bordered on the West by Shannon International Airport and the Shannon Free Zone. On the North it is bordered by the airport flight path and some Industrial Development and to the East by the N18, the national primary route which links Limerick and Ennis.
Shannon is Ireland's only created town, being built in the 1960's as part of the development of the regional economy. Shannon is a very important industrial location, as well as being the site of the world's first duty free airport. The town has potential for significant industrial, residential and commercial development. Lands for such development have been zoned in the South Clare Economic Corridor Local Area Plan 2003 prepared by Clare County Council. Given the proximity to Limerick City, Work is set to commence in 2004 on the Ennis bypass, which will greatly reduce travel time in the west.
Shannon is a relatively new town established in the 1960's. This creates a unique community spirit, which is endorsed by the number and variety of community groups in the town. Along with the GAA, rugby and soccer are other diverse musical, drama groups, chess, tae kwan do, basketball, bowls and bridge. Community facilities are excellent with sporting complexes, library, swimming & leisure complex, golf courses and a rich natural environment consisting of impressive landscapes and natural open spaces.
Shannon is the ideal tourist location point and within 10 minutes drive are the famous tourist resorts of Bunratty Castle & Folk Park and Knappogue Castle. Forty-five minutes away are holiday relaxation centres of Kilkee / Lahinch and Killaloe and the spectacular Cliffs of Moher. A major shopping /retail complex in the town centre is nearing completion.
Shannon town has access to third-level education facilities in Galway city (approx. 86kms away) and Limerick city (19kms). Colleges include Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology, University College Galway, & Limerick Institute of Technology. Also based in Shannon is the world-renowned Shannon College of Hotel Management, which has students from all around the globe, and educates students to the highest international level of Hotel Management.
Shannon's population according to the 2002 Census was 8,561, which reflected a growth rate of 7.% in the period 1996-2002.
Shannon region is home to the largest industrial base outside of Dublin area. Some of the larger companies located in Shannon include Shannon Aerospace, Molex, Intel, Avocent and Element 6.
Approximately 10,500 people are employed in Shannon Town, Shannon Airport and the Industrial Zones.
